After an old department store had been converted to house new commercial office and retail programs, a secondary entry lobby was designed to accommodate increased circulation needs and to enhance way finding from outside of the complex. The full-height glass façade marks the entry point that breaks an otherwise continuous solid brick wall. Low-E insulated glass unit with low-iron glasses is to further enhance its visual transparency. On the interior, four wood panels follow the same language as the glass façade curve to form ceiling and back wall, softening the threshold between the transparency of the glass and the opacity of existing brick wall. Although a new elevator was installed to satisfy ADA requirement, the new entry enhanced the visual experience within existing egress stairs and encouraged more stair usage.
